I was born in Gitarama on July 3, 1984, in a small village in central Rwanda, and was part of a family of eight children. My parents, who were hunters and pastoralists, were killed in the 1994 genocide, along with six of my brothers and sisters.

HopeReach started working in India after the Tsunami which devasted much of the coastline of Tamil Nadu. In March 2006, Lex and his wife moved to Chennai to work fulltime. They joined forces with local NGOs, in various social projects.

Kids with Cameras was founded in 2002 by photographer Zana Briski out of her work teaching photography to children in Calcutta's red-light district. We believe that photography is an effective tool in igniting children's imagination and building self-esteem. We believe in the power of art to transform lives, for both the artist and the viewer.

Kigali Memorial Centre
The Kigali Memorial Centre was opened on the 10th Anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide, in April 2004. The Centre is built on a site where over 250,000 people are buried. These graves are a clear reminder of the cost of ignorance. The Centre is a permanent memorial to those who fell victim to the genocide and serves as a place for people to grieve those they lost.

(ORI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting orphans and vulnerable young people in Rwanda who have been affected by the 1994 genocide and diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. ORI’s principal mission is financing university education and related training for young people who, against tremendous odds, have completed secondary school and scored highly on university entrance examinations. ORI also devotes some resources to other educational and health-related activities.

This site presents Tory Read’s method as well as photos and texts created by more than 200 people in a multi-year project she led in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. PDN recognized Shooting for Peace as one of the best photo web sites of 2002.
It is a must-visit for anyone interested in leading a community photography project. I discovered it March 10, 2009, and I am so grateful.

Through the Eyes of Children began as a photographic workshop in 2000, conceived by photographer, David Jiranek, and inspired by the founder of the Imbabazi Orphanage, Rosamond Carr - an American woman living in Rwanda since 1955. Using disposable cameras, the children originally took pictures for themselves and to share with others, exploring their community, and finding beauty as the country struggles to rebuild.
