The Gisimba Memorial Centre Community Photography Project

12th March 2009
Much reflection, research, and networking have encouraged me to reshape the 3rd photograph workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre. In order to include more children at Gisimba Memorial Centre and give them more creative freedom and a larger audience, and engage a larger audience in Rwanda, I have made several changes to the workshop as outlined below. This means that I have come full circle--it's back to the disposable camera.

The 3rd Community Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre, 2010

10 boys and 10 girls will be given 7 digital cameras each and be left to photograph their life for 7 days. Young photographers will be encouraged to think about sharing their work with a larger audience. They will leave the orphanage and make photographs in Nyamirambo, their neighborhood. Children will select their 'best' photographs to be compiled in an exhibition at the orphanage and on-line. The children will each create text to accompany their work. At a later date, the exhibition will be shown at another local in Kigali. An exhibition in the Uk, where Kresta lives, is planned.

Proceeds and donations (see Fundraising page) from any print and book sales will go to funding a 4th photography workshop, as well as public school tuition for all children at the orphanage.

Your support is needed to make the 3rd Community Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre possible. Your sponsorship and/or donations goes directly to:

1. Kresta's plane ticket to Kigali from London
2. the acquisition of 140 disposable cameras
3. the shipment to Kigali of 140 disposable cameras
4. the development of 140 disposable cameras (in Kigali)
5. community and international exhibition costs
(2 sets of 10 - 20 photographs, matted and framed to museum, archival standard); one to be left at the orphanage, another to be managed by Kresta.

at a later date, to be discussed with the Gisimba Director and confirmed,
6. rental for a space in Kigali, outside of the orphanage
