A Brief History of The Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre, Nyamirambo, Kigali, Rwanda.
1st Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre, 2005

65 children each receives 1 disposable camera. 3 groups of approximately 20 children are taught basic camera and composition skills over three Saturday sessions. Denise, 16, translates Kresta's English into Kinyarwanda and French. Each child writes a brief statement about themselves. All photographs are made on-site at the Gisimba orphanage. A larger audience is not considered. The following year, children receive their 4" by 6" photographs. Kresta begins her Flickr site in order to raise awareness about the orphans at Gisimba. Kresta publishes articles in print and on line about the workshop and the orphans at Gisimba.
2nd Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre, 2006
Sponsors: Nitin Dabholkar and Harshesh Patel
15 children share a Nikon D70 over three months. Basic camera and composition skills are covered. All photographs are made on-site at the Gisimba orphanage. All instruction is given in English and Kresta's very rudimentary Kinyarwanda and French. Although there is a core group of 8 children who participate in the informal workshop, up to 15 children have access to the Nikon D70 and make photographs. Kresta maintains her Flickr site in order to raise awareness about the orphans at Gisimba. Kresta continues to encourage an international audience to sponsor the orphans at Gisimba. Kresta's Flickr site encourages individuals to visit Gisimba Memorial Centre resulting in $3,000 raised and $3,000 pledged because of a partnership between two New York based non-profits Create for a Cause[Chrissie Lam] and Artfullyunforgotten[Heather Metcalfe].
The 3rd Community Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre, 2010
THIS PROJECT IS CURRENTLY ON HOLD AS WE RAISE OUR DAUGHTER-- A FULL-TIME JOB RIGHT NOW. WE HOPE TO CONTINUE IN THE FUTURE.
Much reflection, research, and networking have encouraged me to reshape the 3rd photograph workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre. In order to include more children at Gisimba Memorial Centre and give them more creative freedom and a larger audience, and engage a larger audience in Rwanda, I have made several changes to the workshop as outlined below. This means that I have come full circle--it's back to the disposable camera.
The 3rd Community Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre, 2010
10 boys and 10 girls will be given 7 digital cameras each and be left to photograph their life for 7 days. Young photographers will be encouraged to think about sharing their work with a larger audience. They will leave the orphanage and make photographs in Nyamirambo, their neighborhood. Children will select their 'best' photographs to be compiled in an exhibition at the orphanage and on-line. The children will each create text to accompany their work. At a later date, the exhibition will be shown at another local in Kigali. An exhibition in the Uk, where Kresta lives, is planned.
Proceeds and donations from any print and book sales will go to funding a 4th photography workshop, as well as public school tuition for all children at the orphanage.
Your support is needed to make the 3rd Community Photography Workshop at Gisimba Memorial Centre possible. Your sponsorship and/or donations goes directly to:
1. Kresta's plane ticket to Kigali from London
2. the acquisition of 140 disposable cameras
3. the shipment to Kigali of 140 disposable cameras
4. the development of 140 disposable cameras (in Kigali)
5. community and international exhibition costs
(2 sets of 10 - 20 photographs, matted and framed to museum, archival standard); one to be left at the orphanage, another to be managed by Kresta.
at a later date, to be discussed with the Gisimba Director and confirmed,
6. rental for a space in Kigali, outside of the orphanage
